Job Search Coaching Intensive

It’s TOUGH out there

The job market is tough right now—especially for those of us in tech—and I’ve been hearing variants of all the above statements for months now.

Why now? Well, the tech industry hired heavily to keep up with demand during consecutive lockdowns during 2021/2022. With the return to a semblance of normality in 2022, however, many of these hires were no longer needed. Add to that the lingering fear of a recession across most of the world, and you end up with a very tough job market.

Tough, but not impossible.

I also understand that expensive coaching packages are often out of reach when you’re in the midst of an uncertain job search. That’s why I’ve decided to offer a small group intensive to help UX Designers land their next role.

The first round will be aimed at helping established designers (3-8 years experience) navigate the current (treacherous) job market.

By the end of the 2 weeks, you’ll have:

  • A strong grasp of the current job market and the knowledge and skills you need to navigate it

  • A clear understanding of how to position yourself in this new market for success

  • Nailed down how to tell your story to prospective employers to demonstrate how you can make an impact from Day One in their organisation

  • An updated portfolio with targeted case studies for the roles you want

  • Strengthened and maximised your professional network

  • Brushed up on top-notch interviewing skills

The course is limited to 10 participants, to ensure that each and every person gets the support and guidance they need. Plus, you’ll get two 30-minute 1:1 coaching sessions ($500 value) to use whenever you need—whether that’s during the course, or to prepare for an interview later on.

Is it right for me?

I know you want to know that this course is right for you before you sign up—and I want that too! This is probably the biggest, loudest question in your head right now:

Will this course really help me get a job?

After all, you’ve been through the job search many, many times before. It’s the only way to gain the experience that you have. You know how to prepare yourself, you have a strong portfolio and you know how to show the work you’ve done. You know how to tell your story persuasively.

It’s just not working this time.

It’s not you. It’s the market. What’s worked in the past just isn’t doing the trick anymore.

And I understand that you’re not in a position to spend money on something that might not work—you want to know that this course is going to be the difference between continued unemployment and landing that job.

You want to know that it’s going to work. That it’s the perfect fit for you.

I want that too.

Who’s this class for?

  • You’ve been working in design for 3-8 years

  • You’re currently searching for work…and finding that what’s worked in the past just isn’t doing the trick anymore

  • You’re ready to step up to the challenge and reposition yourself in this new market

  • You don’t want to settle for a just-for-now job

If you ticked that first box and any of the following, you’re a good fit. There’s little risk in signing up, because this course is created just for people like you.

Let’s get you out of that over-saturated market and into your next job. I’d love to see you in the group. You can join here. And if you get in quick, you’ll get a bonus 1:1 hour coaching session with me (valued at $500).

And, as always, if you have any questions I’m here to answer them. You can email me here, or book in time to chat.

If you are not one of those people, either a New UX Designer or Design Leader, sign-up for my next course that will be targeted to your needs.

What’s the schedule?

For Australian sign-ups, the classes will be for 2 weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Other time zones will be added as needed.

Week 1 - Positioning and Stories

Class 1 - Positioning yourself in the current market

This is where I do some homework!

Send me your CV and LinkedIn profile and I’ll tell you how I think you are positioning yourself and we’ll agree if this is where you want to go.

Our focus is to understand the market for established designers and where these roles are and if you are positioning yourself to get those roles.

Homework: Finding 3-4 job roles to apply for

Class 2 - Telling the right stories

Designers know about the design process - we can talk about it forever. But as an established designer, employers are looking for more than process; they are looking for impact, stakeholder management and working with other disciplines. Our stories need to be tailored to their requirements.

In this class, we will be identifying the right stories that will be shown from CV→ portfolio → interview

Homework: Identifying the right stories for your positioning and preferred job roles

Week 2 - Case Studies and Interviews

Class 3 - Case studies within a portfolio

Our portfolios are made up of different case studies that demonstrate our capabilities. This class talks about identifying case studies from projects and which ones to choose to demonstrate the breadth of your skills.

Homework: One new case study developed to match your positioning

Class 4 - Interviewing and Networks

Let’s put your best foot forward - our focus in this class is using your networks to find roles and interviewing to get the role.

Homework: Interview practice with Mags

FAQs

What if it doesn’t work?

I can’t guarantee that you’ll land your dream job next week. But I can guarantee that you will know how to navigate the turbulent job market and be superclear on how to position yourself for success. And I’ll make sure you’ve got the stories and case studies you need to back it all up. And that you’ll be getting the most out of your network and interviews.

Will the course be super general?

Absolutely not. This course is targeted at established UX designers (3-8 years in the market) —which is a pretty niche starting point. But I don’t stop there. The course is limited to 10 people to ensure that each and every person gets the most out of their time—and that I can answer everyone’s questions. Plus, each participant gets 2 x 1:1 coaching sessions with me (valued at $500), where we’ll focus on your journey.

I have a job, but I’m planning to leave. Is this course right for me?

Definitely! Having an understanding of the current job market at the outset of your search is only going to help. By joining this course now, you’ll be off to a head start when it’s time to make the jump.

What if I’m in North America/Europe/Asia?

You are welcome wherever you are! What’s going on in the job market right now is global, and the lessons I’ll share are applicable wherever you are. The 4 sessions will be held online at a time that works best for everyone (the exact timing will depend on the makeup of the class). If you’re unable to attend a session, a recording will be available.

What if I can’t make it to all 4 sessions?

While I heartily recommend trying to make it to each session so that you can take part in the conversation, I also understand that life happens. Each session will be recorded and available to all participants.

Do I have to use the 1:1 sessions during the two weeks?

Nope, you can use them whenever they are most beneficial for you. That may very well be during the course, or it may be a few weeks later to prepare for an interview–or even to help you get established in the new role you land. The sessions are there to support you when you need them.

How much time is the homework going to take me?

I know, we’re all busy. Honestly, though, this question is a bit similar to everyone’s favourite: ‘How long is a piece of string.’ The more thought and effort you put into it, the more you’re going to get out of it. I wouldn’t expect more than 3-4 hours/week though.

How quickly can I start implementing what I learn into my job search?

Immediately. I understand that time is of the essence when you’re looking for work. That’s why I’ve condensed this course into a 2-week intensive. From the first week, you’ll have a strong grasp on the market and how best to position yourself in it—imagine going into your next interview with the confidence of that knowledge supporting you.

Will you be available for questions and guidance?

Absolutely. I’ve limited the spots in this course to 10 people to ensure that I am able to thoroughly support and guide each and every one of the participants. I will be available for questions not only during the 4 group sessions and your 2 x 1:1 coaching sessions but also via email throughout the course. I am here to support you.

Is there a payment plan available?

Yes! I know that money can be stretched when you’re looking for new work, and I don’t want cost to be a barrier. Pay all in one instalment of $996, or in 3 monthly instalments of $332.

Testimonials

Without Mags, I’d be like a hamster on a wheel, applying for jobs that aren’t right and wondering why I’m unmotivated and uninspired.

I knew from the first chat we had that I’d walk away with a different mindset and clarity on my next steps—and I haven’t been disappointed.

What was surprising was the amount of content that was covered in the course. I wasn’t expecting that much and it really went beyond my expectations.

Mags is a master in her field.
