Career Architecture

Where to now?

Many digital professionals float through their careers; sitting in a role that doesn’t suit them because it pays well, finding themselves redundant unexpectedly, or getting to the end of their tether, leaving a role, and taking anything that is offered.

But what if that wasn’t the case? What if, at every inflection point in their career, a person could use a process to help them work though the career decisions - to stay at the same role, leave or get a promotion?

Who is it for?

This book has primarily been written for Designers who are trying to find the answer to ‘What’s next?’ in their career.

‘What’s next?’ is not limited to becoming a manager, leaving a job or leaving the profession; it’s finding the right place for you.

These Designers could be at any part of their career journey, starting out or 25 years in the game; the process is the same, each outcome is personalised to them and their circumstances.

I want Designers to make a conscious decision about their careers, leveraging the skills they use every day in their work.

My career journey

No-one’s career goes on a direct path from one role to the next, becoming more and more prestigious, increasing in money, status and responsibilities. Life happens and our careers change at the same time, responding to needs.

I definitely did not have a straight career path; mine has meandered between management, consultant and practitioner roles, and being a coach and teacher. Each change was the result of an inflection point; times where one or more circumstances (like health, location, family needs and fit with an organisation) combined together and a change was needed.

The core of Career Architecture is based on how I’ve used my information architecture and UX skills to analyse, synthesise and decide on a path; some good decisions, some bad. With experience from my career and my coaching practice, this book will give you the tools to decide on your own journey.
